The Brown Scapular a Share in Our Lady’s Habit
St. John of the Cross writes, “Whenever God bestows favours he clothes them with … love” (Ascent bk II, ch 29.11). Love draws the beloved. Love attracts and seeks union. Our Lord draws those wearing the Scapular of Our Lady up the mountain to be His beloved disciples. Let’s take our Brown Scapular’s seriously, seeking always to wear them as an extension of Our Lady’s very own clothing… thus marking us out, defining us as her beloved children… called to stand with her at the foot of the cross on Mt. Calvary.
Courage, Courage, Courage Needed to Endure Passive Purgation
St. John of the Cross explains that we need two kinds of purgation to make it to the higher levels of holiness and ultimately heaven. He calls them active and passive purgation. Active purgation is what we are tryingto do in Lent… take up voluntary penances to overcome ourselves. But,truth be told, we are too weak, too slow and too small of soul in performing such penances… So, God provides the needed cleansing by subjecting us to passive purgation.
Two Kinds of Levitations: Upright versus Inverted
Once in speaking on the Holy Trinity with St. Teresa of Jesus in the parlor of Carmelite monastery in Avila, St. John of the Cross levitated off the ground. Once, when this same saintly friar was called to exorcize a nun possessed by the devil, the timing happen to land on the eve of this holy feast day. It was about one o’clock when the little friar, John of the Cross, began the solemn prayers of exorcism, but the devil resisted and the hour of vespers came round before the fiend could be driven out. The nuns and the clergy retired to the chapel to chant this hour of the Divine Office…
St Joan of Arc
According to Wikipedia, Joan of Arc, nicknamed “The Maid of Orléans”, is considered a heroine of France for her role during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred Years’ War, and was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint. In this video, we hear how she foretold of a great defeat for France against the English, and how she could lead France to victory, which she did, only to be betrayed by the very people she had fought for – thus imitating in her life, Christ’s betrayal by Judas.
