A group of Irish priests took to the sea to celebrate Mass and to intercede for Ireland at a small monastic site on the island of Skellig Michael, which lies off the south coast of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1996), and was recently made famous when it featured in a Star Wars film. It was from small monastic sites such as this that Irish monks set out to re-evangelise Europe after the ‘Dark Ages’ and brought with them not only Christianity but also knowledge of literature and the arts (for more on the latter visit: How the Irish Saved Civilization – Hinges of History Book 1)
