In this ‘mini-homily’ Fr. Mark Goring recounts how St. Anthony of the Desert, struggled with trying to find the correct balance between the spiritual and temporal in his life. Tradition has it that an angel appeared to St. Anthony, and told him to ‘work a bit, pray a bit’ and that by doing this he would be saved. An insight to help us get the right balance in our own busy lives.

Hidden code in Genesis 1:1
Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a numeric value. The Hebrew text of the Old Testament displays remarkable numeric patterns. Genesis 1:1 is examined in detail. Compelling evidence of God’s supernatural hand of design in the original Hebrew text of the Bible.
The Sustainability of Beauty
I recently had an interesting conversation with an architect who defined himself as a classicist with respect to aesthetics, art, and design. And he explained what he understood that to be in an interesting way. He said that a classicist is someone who believes that there is an ideal form to be realized in design. Whether that be in car, a building, a smartphone, or whatever. And this is consistent with Classical and medieval…
Catholic Morality 101
Our culture holds many different concepts of morality. In this episode, Bishop Barron and Brandon Vogt discuss three major theories–consequentialism, deontology/legalism, and virtue ethics–and how compatible each is with Catholicism.
Why God Chose You!
Friends, in a universe governed by God’s providence, there is no such thing as “dumb luck” or coincidence. Therefore, his election and his choosing is not arbitrary or exclusive. Rather, when God invites his people to mission, he is not calling them for their own sakes, but for the sake of the whole world.
The Saints We Touch: The Example of Ordinary Holiness
In September 2010 I was an Evangelical Christian, sitting at a pew in the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York, seeking some quiet time with God before going to work. I had been seriously mulling, for several months, whether or not to become Catholic. The lives of several of the canonized saints had impressed me very much.
Adoro te devote | Catholic music
Canto Católico cultivates a particular form of sacred art: sacred music. Both outside and within the liturgical action, the Foundation tries to ensure that each of its projects reflects the full depth of this artistic manifestation. This objective requires that in each of its areas of work, the safeguarding of three fundamental dimensions be sought. In the first place, the demands of the artistic dimension of sacred music, with its canons and spaces of originality. Likewise, the contemplative and apostolic character that all work of a sacred nature requires. And, finally, trust, availability and dedication to the renewing action of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Walks on Water
When Jesus walks on water, it is possibly the most famous of all of Jesus’ miracles. However, this theophany of Jesus walking on the water is often dismissed by some skeptics as Jesus walking on a sand bar. Moreover, often overlooked, is the way that Jesus responds to the disciples when Jesus walks on the water. What do Jesus’ words mean in the context of him walking on the water? And, also, what do Jesus’ words mean in the context of how they begin worshiping Jesus when he gets into the boat after?
Beauty, Darwin & Design
Charles Darwin once wrote that the sight of a male peacock’s tail made him physically ill. Why? Because he knew that the gratuitous beauty so prevalent throughout the living world points unmistakably to intelligent design, foresight and plan. Explore the artistry and stunning implications of natural colors, patterns, and ornamentation in the animal and plant kingdoms that exist for a purpose beyond mere survival.

Can I Smoke Marijuana?
If you’re wondering if you can smoke marijuana, Pope Francis offers some advice:
“Let me state this in the clearest possible terms: the problem of drug use is not solved with drugs. Attempts to legalize so-called recreational drugs are not only highly questionable from a legislative standpoint, but they fail to produce the desired affects. Here I would affirm what I stated on another occasion: no to every type of drug use. It’s as simple as that.”
Do the Little Things: Saint David of Wales the Miracle Worker
Saint David was a Welsh bishop of Mynyw (now St David’s) during the 6th century. He is the patron saint of Wales. He is traditionally believed to be the son of Saint Non and the grandson of Ceredig ap Cunedda, king of Ceredigion. The Welsh annals placed his death 569 years after the birth of Christ, but Phillimore’s dating revised this to 601.
